FATIMA SANCTUARY, PORTUGAL

I had visited Fatima Sanctuary in Portugal before. I remember that it was during the month of May when it became very busy with pilgrims fulfilling their promises. I knew that even the Pope was there before. I know its story since I was a child. It says that what is called 'Our Lady' (Jesus' Mother) appeared there to three children who were tending their flock. I do not know the veracity of this story, but it really does not matter. What I wanted to witness was the faith practice of those who go there to fulfill any promise they made whenever they asked ´'Our Lady'' to intercede before Jesus who intercedes before God, as they believe, to heal themselves or one of their dear ones or to resolve any other problem. Jesus said in the Bible in the book of John chapter 14, verse 6 : "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me'. So, I wondered why people were addressing 'Our Lady' when they most needed to pray to God. I know Jesus said in the Bible in book of John chapter 10, verse 30 'The Father and I are one'. So why these believers have to pray to Mary, Jesus' Mother, and not directly to God in the name of Jesus? In May, in Portugal, we have beautiful sunny days and the Spring is blossoming everywhere. It was beautiful all around. However, it was a kind of a chock to get there and see believers sacrificing themselves walking on their knees on a pavement specially prepared for that and feel the smell of burnt wax of the candles filling the air, some left to burn on candle holders, others just thrown into a pyre (candle burning furnace). I even notice a warning saying that because the candle holders are always very busy, should one have more than one promise to fulfill, it was allowed to place one candle in the candle holder, while the others should be thrown into the pyre and so one's promises are fulfilled... It was unbelievable! There was almost a deadly silence and a kind of quiet and accepted suffering to appease God. My heart was broken! Why was that if the God I love is a God full of infinite and everlasting love and care for all of us? Why these believers were punishing themselves? Why all these candles burning, some of them representing parts of the human body if not the whole body? Jesus already did it for all of us! Jesus was God's sacrifice! there is no need for more human or whatever sacrifice, but instead it is time for accepting that we were ransomed by God's tremendous Sacrifice! It was all done when Jesus died on the cross giving up His life and being resurrected, His sacrifice was accepted by God and then he became His son as the Bible refers in the book of Hebrews chapter 1 verse 5 'For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my son; today I have become your Father". There is no need for more sacrifice! Jesus is the Messiah (this word means "Anointed One", the name given to the promised 'Deliverer' who would come to the world as the great redeemer, "anointed" as prophet, priest, and king by God Himself. Jesus declared that he was the Messiah by the things that He did. When John the Baptist asked through his messengers "Are you the coming one, or shall we look for someone else?" in the Bible, book of Matthew chapter 11, verses 3, Jesus responded "Go and report to John the things which you hear and see: the blind receive sight and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them"(verse 5). So, why all this that I was witnessing there? I felt deeply hurt for every one of those believers. There is no need for such a burden! Jesus said in the Bible, book of John chapter 8, verse 32 'You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free". Jesus is the only One who can give us this wonderful feeling of being free from sin and accepted by God. There is no need for ´'Our Lady' to mediate between us and God! And how can that be possible when she is dead and in her grave? Jesus is our only mediator as the Bible refers in the book of 1 Timothy chapter 2, verse 5 "For there is One God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus' whose tomb is empty because He is risen. Knowing all this, my heart was bleeding for all those wonderful believers sacrificing themselves, not knowing that Jesus already did it all for them. God wants us to enjoy His love and be happy! He is willing to give us all the blessings we ask Him. There is no place nor need for human sacrifice in God's heart! He loves us dearly! I remember that then I left Fatima Sanctuary with a very deep sadness and a feeling of helplessness. When I returned to visit my family last December, I wanted my husband to visit this Sanctuary. So we went on the 1st day of January 2011. It was a very cold day. A freezing wind was blowing although the sun was graciously shining. My eldest daughter and her loving family went with us. I had the same feeling as before. But this time my heart was moved to take pictures and I promised myself I would write something and share what I was witnessing. My heart humbly cries out for those fellow believers whom I respect and love as I saw their faith and sincerity in what they were doing. They are just being misled by their religious leaders who are teaching man made doctrine and not God's Word which we can see replicated in almost all other religions and denominations, albeit in different forms. I do hope that what I wrote above will reach, even if it is only one, of these believers and guide them to the study of what the Bible says about how Wonderful, Magnificent, Most Gracious, Loving, Caring and Provider our God is! God has an everlasting Love for us all! He chose us as His 'children' even before the beginning of times, as the Bible refers in the book of Ephesians chapter 1 verse 4 'According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love' I would like to end by assuring all of us that we are princes and princesses of the Universe, as God, Creator and Maintainer of the Universe, is willing to be our God, our King and our Father 'For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus' (letter to the Galatians chapter 3 verse 26). God be with every one of us always throughout the New Year!
